Israel Miller started his career as a designer and maker of shoes for the theatrical profession in New York. He established the I. Miller Shoe Company, which not only designed and manufactured women?s shoes, but became a leading importer of shoes with a national chain of over 200 retail stores, which were active throughout the 1920s-1960s. Miller took over a large building in Times Square which he had remodeled in 1926 by architect Louis H. Friedland. The decorative sculpture on the building?s façade, by sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder, was a tribute to the theatrical profession with statues depicting Ethel Barrymore as Ophelia (drama), Marilyn Miller as Sunny (musical comedy), Rosa Ponselle as Norma (opera), and Mary Pickford as Little Lord Fauntleroy (film). Miller also included an inscription beneath the cornice that reads ?The Show Folks Shoe Shop Dedicated To Beauty In Footwear.? https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=93822524 93822524 I. Since 1894, XLNT Foods has been a part of Southern California's history. Starting out as a push cart on the side of Southern California roads, XLNT became a popular lunch time meal for some of California's earliest residents. It was Californians love for the recipe that allowed XLNT to be one of the first tamales to be distributed and sold directly to grocery stores. To this day it is a staple item in Southern California grocery stores, easily recognized on the shelf by its red, white and blue packaging. https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=93822684 93822684 XLNT Tamales - 1930 XLNT is still in operation today. Even after all these years XLNT's recipe remains the same. In 1920 Powel Crosley founded the company that pioneered radio broadcasting and mass market manufacturing around the world. Dismayed with the $130 price tag for the radio receiver he promised to buy for his son?s birthday, Crosley decided to make his own. Upon successfully building a working set for only $35, Crosley was quick to spot the mass market potential. It was a simple idea - design a fully functioning radio, meticulously craft each unit with obsessive detail and precise accuracy, and of course add a measure of consideration for the wallet. https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=93941729 93941729 Crosley Radios - 1936 https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=93941730 93941730 Crosley Radios - the 1936 Line And here's the brochure illustrating the 1936 Crosley radio lin-up. https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=94903548 94903548 Crosley Radios and Joe Penner Why not listen to radio comedian Joe Penner on your new Crosley? Wanna buy a duck? Joe was an American 1930s-era vaudeville, radio and film comedian. He was an ethnic Hungarian born as József Pintér in Nagybecskerek, Hungary, now Zrenjanin, Serbia. He passed through Ellis Island as a child when his family emigrated to New York City. Joe Penner was voted radio's top comedian in 1934, but a 1935 dispute with the ad agency over the show's format resulted in Penner quitting "The Baker's Broadcast " on June 30, 1935. A year later, he returned with The Joe Penner Show which began airing October 4, 1936 on CBS, sponsored by Cocomalt. His films include College Rhythm (1934), New Faces of 1937 (1937), The Day the Bookies Wept (1939) and Millionaire Playboy (1940). https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=93942502 93942502 Schenley's 1940's - Silver Wedding Gin. During the 1920s and until repeal of Prohibition, liquor manufacturers were under strict government control that limited production for specific purposes. After repeal in 1933, Schenley Distillers Corporation was created in Delaware and really took off with their line of fine booze. https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=94024050 94024050 Schenley's https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=94024051 94024051 Old Quaker Whiskey 90 Proof I didn't know Quakers drank the hard stuff. One writer says Polly began as a chain of independently owned stations selling gasoline in California in the teens and twenties. This source says that Polly became a part of Wilshire Oil of Los Angeles during the Depression. Wilshire was founded in 1910 according to two sources and in 1919 according to another. In any case, Polly stations were a common sight on the West coast from the twenties through the fifties before and after the war. Around 1960, Wilshire was bought by Gulf and Polly stations became Gulf stations. https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=94900548 94900548 Poly Gas https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=94900549 94900549 Poly Gas https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=94900550 94900550 Squibb Dental Cream Yes folks, Squibb contained more than According to the 1928 advertisement, Squibb contained more than 50% Milk of Magnesia to neutralize mouth acids. The Ex-Lax Company, the makers of the famous chocolated laxative, came up with a clever idea to sell their product on the radio. At the midway point of Columbia?s radio show the "EX-LAX BIG SHOW", the studio was darkened except for a single spotlight shining at center stage. Concealed in shadow, a mysterious woman known as "Madame X" was going to speak in behalf of Ex-Lax. She was known on the airwaves as "The Ex-Lax Reporter." During the commercial, Madame X conducted a "Man On The Street" interview, which was very popular on radio during the 1930?s. Her objective was to ask the people how they were doing and if they were feeling "regular." Unlike other "Man On The Street" interviews, Madame X's interview was staged strictly for the Ex-Lax commercial. If it was on the level, the people being interviewed were inclined to answer "none of your business" or other comments that may not necessarily be appropriate for radio. Since this interview was staged, the person Madame X was interviewing didn't mind telling her, the studio audience, and the radio listeners that his/her bodily functions were performing at their peak level. When Madame X asked what that person did for those times when nature wasn't co-operating, he/she gladly replied it wasn't a problem--- as long they had their trusty package of Ex-Lax nearby. When Ex-Lax was mentioned, Madame X informed the radio listeners how gentle and effective it was in easing the problem laxatives were used for. https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=94060777 94060777 Santa Fe Wine https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=94900546 94900546 Santa Fe Wine https://vintagematches.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=94900547 94900547 Domino Cigarettes - 1939 Domino Cigarettes were manufactured by the Reed Tobacco Company starting in 1933.
