June 1928 - Formal charges against five men in connection with the robbery of the Marberc hotel early Wednesday, when three armed bandits escaped with a money drawer containing $2270 in cash, were filed in the criminal district court Friday. Four of the men were charged with assault and robbery, and the fifth with being an accessory.
The men charged are Samuel LaRocca, alias Jack Lewis, 25 years old, 2808 St. Ann street; John Mitchell, 28, 3327 Canal street; Lee O'Neil, 23, 2806 Castiglione street, and William Ebberman, 22, 2634 Dublin street, all charged with assault and robbery. Alexander J. Cordona, 20, 1220 Dumaine street is charged with being an accessory before and after the act.
According to police, LaRocca, O'Neil and Mitchell were the three bandits who held up the night cashier of the hotel and took the money. LaRocca has been identified as one of the bandits by the bell boy and negro porter at the hotel.
Cordona is alleged by police to have received the empty money box from the bandits, following the robbery, and Ebberman is alleged to have borrowed a meat cleaver from the cook in the Olympia restaurant, 1006 Iberville street, for the purpose of destroying the money box before it was burned. The restaurant is underneath the soft drink establishment, operated by Cordona, to which the bandits are alleged to have fled following the hold-up.
